DMS 103B: Basic Video Production

This course is a basic introduction to the tools and techniques of video production. Students will become familiar with using video and develop strategies for its application as an alternative medium of communication. Crucial to this project is the concurrent development of a critical perspective on mainstream media culture. Video art screenings and readings in media theory will critically address the relations between viewers, producers, and the media.

I structure the class around the emphasis of experimentation with the media of video and I'll introduce you to video specific artists and some theory. Production projects will range from editing exercises to more experimental group projects. Its my hope that by the end of this course you would have a strong understanding of Final Cut Studio, a basic knowledge of cinematography and a primer on video art theory. Those of you planning on persuing a degree in Media Study would also have a body of work from which you could draw from for your portfolio application.
